ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT SOLD: LATEST OBAMACARE PR BLITZ OFF TO A ROCKY START

“SKEPTICAL SENIORS” & GOP OFFENSIVE COMPLICATE YET ANOTHER TIRED, UNCONVINCING OBAMACARE SALES PITCH

June 9, 2010 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

Yesterday, President Obama re-launched a failed campaign to sell the American people on a disastrous health care law that they have already rejected.  The President addressed his remarks to seniors, whose deeply held skepticism of the bill is well-justified.  An analysis conducted by the President’s own Medicare actuary indicates that the new health care law includes roughly $575 billion in Medicare cuts, which will be used to fund the creation of a massive new entitlement program.  As a result of these cuts, enrollment in the popular Medicare Advantage program will be slashed in half.  According to an Associated Press account of the event, “skeptical seniors” made their concerns clear:

“Obama pitches health care overhaul to skeptical seniors.  President Obama sought to sell the health overhaul law yesterday to skeptical seniors…

“The questions Obama got from a crowd at a senior center in suburban Maryland, and from others listening on the phone, suggested that plenty of doubts remain even now that the rancorous health care debate has faded from the headlines.”

With polls showing that a majority of Americans – particularly seniors – oppose the new health care law, out-of-touch Washington Democrats are hoping a PR campaign funded by millions of Washington special interest dollars will help win over the public.  Republicans are listening to the American people and not allowing Washington Democrats’ calculated “PR gimmick” to go unchecked:

“Almost from the moment the health care reform package was signed into law on March 23, Congressional Republicans embarked on a highly coordinated effort to stoke public dissatisfaction with the legislation and shine a light on what GOP Members contend are its negative, unintended consequences.

“The House and Senate Republican leadership teams have released dozens of documents to make that case, scheduled floor time for Members to give speeches and coordinated the booking of radio and television appearances. Republican leadership staffers from both chambers continue to meet every week to strategize on health care.”
(Roll Call, 6/9/10)

While the President devotes his time and energy to selling a government takeover of health care Americans have already rejected, he is ignoring the issue people care most about: the out-of-control spending spree that is hurting our economy and killing American jobs.  Republicans have repeatedly called on President Obama and Congressional Democrats to cut spending now, but neither have responded.

The American people deserve more than a “glitzy PR campaign” from the President.  They deserve real leadership and a government that addresses their concerns.  That is why Republicans have proposed legislation to scrap this job-killing health care law and replace it with common-sense reforms focused on lowering costs and protecting American jobs.  Republicans are also giving Americans the chance to weigh in through America Speaking Out and YouCut, which allows you to vote, both online and on your cell phone, on spending cuts that you want to see the House enact.
