BOEHNER ON FOX NEWS: SPEAKER PELOSI’S 1,990-PAGE BILL INCREASES PREMIUMS, RAISES TAXES, CUTS SENIORS’ BENEFITS

GOP LEADER OUTLINES REPUBLICANS’ BETTER SOLUTIONS TO LOWER HEALTH CARE COSTS, INCREASE ACCESS, IMPROVE QUALITY

October 30, 2009 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

In an appearance on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) outlined the impact of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) 1,990-page government takeover of health care that will cost Americans at least $1.1 trillion.  Boehner noted that Speaker Pelosi’s health care bill will raise the cost of health insurance for most American families, kill jobs with new tax increases and new mandates, and cut seniors’ Medicare benefits.  Boehner also highlighted the better solutions House Republicans are offering to lower health care costs for seniors, working families, and small businesses.  Following are the full video and excerpts from the interview:

BOEHNER ON SPEAKER PELOSI’S 1,990-PAGE GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE:

“All you need to know is there are 1,990 pages.  That should tell you everything.  It’s not just the public option that will drive private health companies out of business.  It’s the over 50 new agencies, commissions, mandates that will raise the cost of health insurance for all Americans, it’s going to be immensely expensive at a time when we’re broke, and thirdly, half a $1 trillion cuts to Medicare.”

BOEHNER ON THE $500 BILLION IN SENIORS’ MEDICARE CUTS IN SPEAKER PELOSI’S HEALTH BILL:

“I’ve got 27,000 Medicare Advantage enrollees in my district, and according to the Congressional Budget Office, the cuts to Medicare Advantage will result in 80 percent of them loosing the coverage they have and forcing them into traditional Medicare…Reducing the growth is one thing; but when you go in there and virtually eliminate a program that millions of American seniors depend upon, this violates what the president said when he said, ‘if you like the plan you have, you can keep it.’  Clearly, if you're on Medicare advantage, that's not true.”

BOEHNER ON NEW MANDATES AND BUREAUCRACIES IN PELOSI CARE:

“What we do know is that the word ‘shall’ is in their bill over 3,425 times.  When you talk about the growth of government and this big bureaucracy here in Washington and all the mandates and taxes in this bill, that is why the word ‘shall’ is in this bill 3,425 times.  This is exactly what the American people have been saying for months that they don’t want.  Republicans have better solutions.  We think a step-by-step approach to make our current system work better will bring down the cost of health insurance and make it more affordable for Americans.”

BOEHNER ON HOUSE REPUBLICANS’ BETTER SOLUTIONS TO LOWER COSTS AND INCREASES ACCESS TO QUALITY CARE:

“You don’t make this bill better. You just take this bill and not pass it, and pass about eight or nine separate small bills that says let's get rid of junk lawsuits, let’s allow Americans to buy insurance across state lines, let’s let individuals and small employers group together so they can buy health insurance at the same kind of prices that big companies and unions do today.  These are common sense things that will bring down the cost of health insurance to make it more affordable for more Americans.”

BOEHNER ON SPEAKER PELOSI’S GOVERNMENT-RUN INSURANCE “OPTION”:

“The government option is a joke.  The government has no cost of capital.  The government will write all the rules.  It’s clear that they will drive all the private health-care companies of the business…The only thing different about the public option is how much they're going to pay providers.  The big, robust public option is in this bill.  I think this is leading us toward a single payer national health care system and it will bankrupt our kids and grandchildren.  This is exactly what the people of America don’t want.  They want a more step-by-step, gradual approach that will fix the problems in the current system, and that is what Republicans will be offering.”
