SMALL BUSINESS GROUPS BLAST DEMOCRATS’ $1.5 TRILLION, JOB-KILLING TAX HIKE

AS UNEMPLOYMENT SOARS, DEMOCRATS TARGET AMERICA’S BEST HOPE FOR NEW JOBS: SMALL BUSINESSES
July 15, 2009 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

Is killing more American jobs by targeting small business, as the Wall Street Journal reports today, really what America needs at a time of a 9.5 percent – and rising – unemployment rate?  A broad coalition of job-creating groups – representing small businesses to homebuilders and manufacturers – has come together to stand against the Democrats’ $1.5 trillion government takeover of health care and new small business tax because it would kill jobs and reduce the quality of health care in America.

One of those groups – the National Federation of Independent Business (NFI – weighed in today on the Democrats’ bill, saying it would hurt the economy and destroy jobs and reduce access to affordable health care:

“NFIB opposes the [Democrats’ bill] because it threatens the viability of our nation’s job creators, fails to increase access and choice to all small businesses, destroys choice and competition for private insurance and fails to address the core challenge facing small businesses – cost.”

And the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which represents thousands of U.S. employers that provide tens of millions of jobs for American workers, just sent a letter to Congress opposing the Democrats’ health care bill, citing the small business tax as the top reason:

“[The Democrats’ bill] fails to pass our simple litmus test: this legislation will not address the nation’s health cost explosion, will steeply hike taxes in an already precarious economic situation, will fail to lead to more affordable, accessible, quality health coverage, and will lead us toward government-run health care.  In short, it will make a bad situation worse, at great costs to the nation in jobs, taxes, and freedom.”

A coalition letter signed by 31 groups representing almost every segment of our economy and employing millions of Americans sent a letter to Congress as well, raising serious concerns about House Democrats’ expensive government takeover of health care:

“We are specifically concerned with a proposal to mandate that employers either provide health insurance or pay a new eight percent payroll tax. The House “pay or play” proposal is even more troublesome because employers are also mandated to pay the majority of employee premiums. Exempting some micro-businesses will not prevent this provision from killing many jobs. Congress should allow market forces and employer autonomy to determine what benefits employers provide, rather than deciding by fiat.”

These 31 groups represent almost every segment of our economy, employ millions of Americans, and will be responsible for an economic recovery:

House Republicans believe there is a way to achieve health care reform without a government takeover, without increasing costs and forcing 114 million Americans off of their current health care plans as the Democrats’ proposal would do, and without raising taxes on small businesses – or anyone else during a recession.  The House GOP has put forward a plan to reduce health care costs, expand access, and increase the quality of care in a way Americans can afford.  Importantly, the plan will not lead to higher taxes and fewer jobs, and the proposal will ensure that patients and doctors, not government bureaucrats, continue to make personal medical decisions.
