ON FOX, BOEHNER WARNS ABOUT DEMOCRATS’ PLANS FOR GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE

GOP LEADER: “UNLESS THE PRESIDENT IS WILLING TO WORK IN A BIPARTISAN FASHION, I DO NOT THINK THAT WE WILL HAVE A HEALTH CARE BILL THIS YEAR”

June 24, 2009 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

In an interview today on FOX’s Your World with Neil Cavuto, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) warned that the Democrats’ plans to force a government takeover of health care will increase costs, limit treatments, raise taxes and reduce the quality of patient care.  He highlighted House Republicans’ better solution that will make health care more affordable and accessible for all Americans.  Boehner also discussed Republicans’ commitment to standing on principle by opposing Democrats’ reckless fiscal policies and offering better solutions to curb spending, create jobs, and control the debt.  Full video and key excerpts of Boehner’s interview follow:

BOEHNER ON THE DEMOCRATS’ PROPOSED GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE:

“There is no debate between Democrats and Republicans about the need to provide affordable access for health insurance for all Americans.  We agree on that issue.  Where we begin to part company is over the fact that they want this big government run plan that is going to ration care, it’s going to raise taxes, and frankly, I think, decrease the quality of care that Americans get.  Republicans have a plan that builds on the current system.  It’s a bottom-up fix of the current program to try to get more people insured.  And I think at the end of the day, that is a much better prescription.  And unless the President is willing to work in a bipartisan fashion, I don’t think we’re going to have a health care bill this year.”

BOEHNER ON COMMON SENSE SOLUTIONS TO BRING DOWN THE SKYROCKETING COSTS OF HEALTH CARE:

“Americans know that our system costs too much.  So if our health care system costs too much, why do my Democrat colleagues want to spend another one and half to two trillion dollars a year more in order for it to work better.  All we’re going to do is raise taxes and increase the debt.  I think that what Americans want is they want us to find ways to reduce the cost of their health care.  Common sense things like lawsuit reform that cost doctors and hospitals billions of dollars every year in insurance premiums and requires them - forces them to do all kinds of unnecessary procedures to try protect them from lawsuits.  That would be one common-sense thing we could do to help lower the cost and use that money to insure more Americans.”

BOEHNER ON REPUBLICANS STANDING ON PRINCIPLE & OFFERING BETTER SOLUTIONS:

“We have been through two disastrous election cycles.  The Republican brand has taken its share of hits. But over the course of the time that I have been leader, I have tried to focus our members in on standing  on principle, standing up for what we believe in, fighting against these policies that have run up all of these bailouts, all of this spending, all of this debt.  And at the same time, when we have to oppose the President or our Democrat colleagues in Congress, it is our responsibility to tell the people what our better solution would be.  We had a better solution on the stimulus bill that would have created twice as many jobs at half the cost.  We’ve got a better solution on the budget and a better solution on energy and health care.  Our health care plan really will insure most Americans – make sure they have access to affordable health insurance.  We are actually doing something about bringing the cost of health insurance down.  We don’t create this big government-run plan.”
