SPEAKER PELOSI’S NATIONAL ENERGY TAX WOULD COST AMERICAN JOBS, BOOST GLOBAL COMPETITORS INSTEAD

WITH UNEMPLOYMENT TOPPING NINE PERCENT, NEW STUDY NOTES DEMOCRATS’ NATIONAL ENERGY TAX WILL COST 2.5 MILLION JOBS

June 17, 2009 | House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) | Permalink

Americans have watched with growing outrage in recent years as misguided government policies have pushed American jobs overseas to global competitors like China and India, and with unemployment now topping nine percent, workers are looking to their leaders in Washington for solutions to help stop the job loss.  They are asking: where are the jobs?  Unfortunately, Democratic legislation that could reach the House floor as soon as next week will force families, small businesses, or anyone who has the audacity to flip on a light switch to pay a new national energy tax.

What does that mean for American workers?  In short, if the Democrats in charge of Washington succeed in enacting Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax, things are about to get much, much worse.  Why?  Because, as the Washington Post reported recently, competitors like China won’t adopt a national energy tax of their own, leaving the door wide open for even more jobs to move from American shores to theirs:

“But, after their talk this week, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said China would not agree to reduce its emissions.”

“‘China is still a developing country, and the present task confronting China is to develop its economy and alleviate poverty, as well as raise the living standard of its people,’ spokesman Qin Gang said.  ‘Given that, it is natural for China to have some increase in its emissions, so it is not possible for China in that context to accept a binding or compulsory target.’”

How much of an impact would this imbalance between the United States and our competitors like China and India have on American workers?  Take a look at what the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) predicts in a recently-released study, which notes that Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax will:

  • Cut net employment by 2.5 million jobs (even after accounting for new “green” jobs);
  • Reduce national GDP roughly $350 billon below the baseline level; and
  • Reduce earnings for the average U.S. worker by $390 per year.

Losing 2.5 million jobs on top of the job of nine percent unemployment is an untenable proposition for American workers and consumers, according to NBCC President and CEO Harry Alford:

“These findings add to a growing body of evidence that demonstrates cap-and-trade would make American consumers poorer and the products they buy more expensive.”

“Moreover, the NBCC study finds there will be little, if any, environmental impact to justify the high price U.S. families will have to pay, since the trading system will deliver virtually negligible changes in global CO2 emissions so long as developing nations such as China and India don’t buy in.”

House Republicans believe American workers deserve better, and that’s why they have introduced the American Energy Act to clean up the environment, reduce energy costs, and – yes – create more American jobs.  To do so, the legislation would:

  • Increase environmentally-safe energy production on remote lands and far off our shores;
  • Promote the use of alternative fuels that will reduce carbon emissions, such as nuclear, clean-coal, and renewable energy technologies; and
  • Encourage increased efficiencies and cutting edge technologies to maximize America’s energy potential.

All year long, Democrats have promised more jobs for the American people.  Where are the jobs?  The trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending bill has not produced the jobs Democrats promised, the $3.6 trillion budget is loaded with more spending, taxing, and borrowing than ever before, and now Democrats are barreling ahead with a national energy tax that may represent the worst news of all for workers and their families.  Isn’t it time for Democrats to back up their rhetoric on jobs with real action?  Shouldn’t Democrats work with Republicans to clean up the environment, lower energy costs, and create more jobs here at home – without raising taxes?
