Boehner Praises House Passage of GOP Measure to Block Release of Terrorist Detainee Photos

WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after passage of a GOP proposal to block for three years the release of terrorist detainee photos – a proposal that has received similarly strong bipartisan support in the Senate:

“A clear, bipartisan majority in both the House and Senate is now on the record in support of blocking the release of terrorist detainee photos that would place our servicemen and women at greater risk around the world.  Obviously, I hope Democratic leaders crafting the final version of the troop funding bill will respect the large, bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate who strongly oppose releasing these photos.”

NOTE: During today’s consideration of a Republican-authored motion to instruct conferees on a FY 2009 supplemental appropriations bill to fund troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, 95 Democrats joined 172 Republicans in opposition to the release of terrorist detainee photos for three years.  By an 86-3 margin, the Senate overwhelmingly supported the same language last month.

The GOP proposal also instructs House conferees to accept the Senate’s overall funding level for the conference report ($91.3 billion) and the House’s Department of Defense ($81.3 billion) and Military Construction ($3.2 billion) funding levels within the legislation; and to not approve the final conference report unless the text of the agreement is made available to the American people online for 48 hours.
